ISLAMIC MEDICAL ASSOCIATION OF NORTH AMERICA A BRIEF HISTORY
Dr. Faroque Ahmad Khan, MB, M.A.C.P.
Dr. Ashraf Sufi, current
IMANA president asked me to write about the history of IMANA for the
directory. While not a historian, I agreed to write about my own
experiences, which started in early 70’s, and how IMANA has nurtured and
impacted me over the past thirty plus years. I will highlight a few
specific timelines that will hopefully provide the reader a glimpse into
the IMANA’s early beginnings, some struggles and challenges it faced
the current status and conclude with few suggestions for the future.
The Beginnings:

of 1967 at the annual meeting of the Muslim Students Association (MSA),

the Muslim Medical Association as a branch of MSA. (MSA evolved into
the Islamic Society of North America). A year later in 1968 the first
independent convention of IMA of US & Canada was held in New York
City. The founders wrote the constitution, Dr Bashir Zikria obtained
the tax exempt status, developed the IMANA Logo and along with the
other ‘founders” laid the foundation of IMANA. (Read More...)
