SaveSmile - Sudan Surgical Mission 2011


The IMANA SaveSmile surgical team arrived late Saturday evening in Sudan. Among the physicians were two plastic surgeons; Dr. Zahir and Dr. Galaria, two anesthesiologists; Dr. Mehr and Dr. Malik, one emergency medical - pediatrician; Dr. Chaudhry, and medical student, Narina Fuseini. The IMANA team was received by the executive director for Sudanesse Islamic Medical Association, Mr. Hasabo, and later checked into hotel to get rest after their long journeys.

On Sunday, the team was at the national hospital by 8am. The day started with an opening ceremony which was held by the Sudanese Plastic Surgery Society and the Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Society. The distinguished guests were senior plastic surgeons from Khartoum and the Minister of Health for Khartoum Province. Following the ceremony, the team went immediately to work. Nine patients were assessed by the anesthesia pediatric team, allowing for local residents and students to participate. Eight patients were determined appropriate for surgical intervention. The team was the fast at work completing eight cleft lip reconstructions. While the team was operating, the residents and students interviewed one hundred and fifty potential patients for preoperative assessment.
