Children suffering from cleft lips and palates are a major medical issue in Sudan. They have difficulty in eating and speaking, suffer from bullying, and find limited options for marriage and employment in adulthood. IMR surgical teams have traveled to Sudan the past ten years, providing 1,538 free cleft lip reconstructions. This is a procedure so basic and commonly done in the U.S., but nearly unattainable in Sudan — many families travel by foot for a chance to be seen by the IMR team.
