Pandemics & Climate Change

February 19th, 2021

Can you imagine our surprise when a late-night talk show host spelled out WHY we at IMANA care so much about climate change!

Here is a recap:

Disease outbreaks are increasing all around the world. Think about all the illnesses we have seen in just the last 20 years (SARS, H1N1, Ebola, MERS, Zika, and now Covid-19). And the reality is that millions of unknown viruses are just hanging around in animals (zoonotic). Experts estimate that 75% of infectious diseases are zoonotic.

The danger to humans comes when we come in contact with animals we usually would not. Climate change activists have been warning about things like deforestation for years.

Did you know? Humans have changed almost ¾ of the Earth’s land areas. Because of it, mosquitos, mice, and bats are all moving closer to humans and bringing illnesses like malaria, Ebola, and Lyme disease with them.

Experts advise the solution is to take a one health perspective to achieve optimal health outcomes recognizing the interconnection between people, animals, plants, and their shared environment.

As medical professionals inspired by our Islamic faith, we’ll work hard to vaccinate against the pandemic while simultaneously advocating to address the threats faced by millions due to climate change.

We hope you will join us in these efforts.
